LIBE 477B Final Vision Post #2: Who is going to benefit?

Source Teacher burnout is real. A recent survey of BCTF members showed that this is the case. Teachers feel increased workload and stress, are negatively impacted by the teacher shortage, and don’t feel they are meeting their students’ academic needs (BCTF, 2023). The system is broken, but until working conditions improve, technology can come in to support and alleviate some of that stress. One use of technology is artificial intelligence. When it first came on the education scene, it was feared because of how students would use it, but now more applications for teachers are beginning to emerge, and it can act like a teacher’s assistant. BCTF Survey Results Target Audience My final vision project will be creating how-to videos for educators to implement different applications of AI in their planning and teaching. I’ve been talking to educators in my school and very few of them have played around with AI, used it to help lesson plan, or differentiate their instruction. So many educator...

AI Superhero to the Teacher's Rescue!

AI Generated Image from Bing (don't mind the fingers!) My vision for learning for the 21 st  century is to utilize the technological tools available in authentic ways to help increase student achievement and engagement (Canadian Library Association, 2014).  One of the ways of doing that is utilizing AI to support lesson planning and differentiation. This will enable increased personalization so students can access the curriculum at their level. A quick online search shows that companies are harnessing the power of AI for this specific purpose! Below are some examples of websites to help plan lessons which I plan to vet and share. They have free trials but require a subscription for full capabilities.                           Eduaide   ...

LIBE 477B Inquiry Post: Key Take Aways

‌I’ve had many key takeaways during the last four weeks of our inquiry posts. Fostering a Love of Reading I focused my entire Masters inquiry on this idea, so it holds a special place in my heart. The key ideas that really resonate are making sure that students have books that represent who they are and allow windows into other people’s experiences (We Are Teacher, 2018). We would become a much more empathetic society if we read more about cultures different from our own. I think books for young people are becoming more diverse, but they need to better represent their real lives, not just the trauma they experience. I love this page from the graphic novel, New Kid, by Jerry Craft. I think it really comes down to finding books students want to read, allowing them time and space to read them for pleasure, and having authentic conversations about what we read. It seems so simple and yet so many educators and companies seem to be taking the joy out of reading, so no wonder students don’t ...
