LIBE477B - Reading Review Part C: Refining my Inquiry Focus

While driving home the other day, I listened to the AI in Education Conversation podcast. I scrolled through the different episodes and landed on Episode 18: “AI is coming to your classroom/school. Here’s what you should do.” Daniel Lopez opened with an analogy from an article from George Dillard titled “AI Is Coming to My Classroom. I Have No Idea What to Do.” He compared the use of AI by students as the famous Marshmallow Experiment. A child was left in a room with a marshmallow and were told that if they if they showed self-control and didn't eat the marshmallow within a given time period, they would receive two marshmallows. I love this comparison. Students should be able to utilize AI for their success, but there should be parameters in place. I continued to listen to the podcast episode and heard Daniel Lopez give some great suggestions for implementing AI in the classroom. Artificial Intelligence and its use in schools is still a relatively new topic, but there is still a plethora of resources that can help me find information about my inquiry foci: What is Artificial Intelligence? practical uses of AI for teachers and students implications of AI, such as for assessment and plagiarism limitations of AI copyright issues TED TALK VIDEO: How AI Could Save (Not Destroy) Education by Sal Khan My go to always when learning something new, is YouTube, so I thought I’d start my research exploration there. The first link that struck me was a TedTalk from Sal Khan, the creator of Khan Academy. Khan Academy is an online course platform where students can learn about a variety of different subjects through videos and practice their skills through activities. The summary describes the potential opportunities of AI for education and how AI could be used as personal tutors and personal assistants. AI will give me a personal assistant? LIBE 477B Reading Review: Part A

What future teaching opportunities interest me that relate to digital technologies… a big question. I have always been interested in technology and integrating it into my teaching practice – even completing the Integrating Technology into the Digital Age Diploma Program at SFU! Yes, I’m doing another diploma program (I even have my Masters). I need a badge that says life-long learner! I completed the diploma program while I was a TTOC and inquired into using an app to monitor the noise level in classrooms, creating relationships with students, and creating a TTOC-focused personal learning network via Twitter.   I started brainstorming potential opportunities for this course.
