Artificial Intelligence and its use in schools is still a relatively new topic, but there is still a plethora of resources that can help me find information about my inquiry foci:
- What is Artificial Intelligence?
- practical uses of AI for teachers and students
- implications of AI, such as for assessment and plagiarism
- limitations of AI
- copyright issues
TED TALK VIDEO: How AI Could Save (Not Destroy) Education by Sal Khan
My go to always when learning something new, is YouTube, so I thought I’d start my research exploration there. The first link that struck me was a TedTalk from Sal Khan, the creator of Khan Academy. Khan Academy is an online course platform where students can learn about a variety of different subjects through videos and practice their skills through activities. The summary describes the potential opportunities of AI for education and how AI could be used as personal tutors and personal assistants. AI will give me a personal assistant? Sign me up!
WEBINAR: Raising the Standards of Curriculum Design Using Generative AI
While looking through my school district email, I noticed an email from our IB learning platform, ManageBac. To be honest, I rarely ever read these emails, but the other day I did, and low and behold the email contained information on an upcoming webinar on September 26th, where their Schools Technology and Integrations Director, Adam Morris, will speak about how AI will change the IB PYP program in the following areas:
- student empowerment – immediate feedback and adaptive learning
- identity languages – foster multilingualism and translanguaging
- portfolios – to help foster communication between school and home
- early intervention – can help identify at risk students
- AI in the curriculum – how to use AI safely and thoughtfully
PODCAST: The AI Education Conversation by Daniel Lopez
There are several podcasts on AI in education, but The AI Education Conversation still regularly publishes new podcasts with interesting subjects such as:
- How has AI impacted educators?
- Has AI killed the essay?
- Can AI help support mental health?
- Pope Francis poses in a puffer jacket – the impacts of AI generated images
I look forward to having conversations with my students about AI generated images and the related copyright issues and I never even thought about AI supporting mental health so that should be a thought-provoking episode!

My next step was accessing the UBC Library databases.
BOOK: Artificial Intelligence in Schools by Varun Arora
Some chapter highlights include:
- curriculum development
- feedback and scoring
- student empowerment
- behavioural and classroom management
- deeper, higher-order, authentic Learning
- teacher education and professional Development
- challenges
I’m personally very interested in the student empowerment and authentic learning sections. I have found that when students have choice and there are real-world applications, they are much more engaged.

In the article, the authors discuss the following:
- administration and grading
- designing assignments
- the ability to differentiate the curriculum based on the needs of the students which has resulted in increased outcomes
It’s great to see that there is evidence that AI helps personalize the curriculum in a way that helps increase student success. I’m very interested to see how to use AI in this way.
This article examines the opportunities and limitations of using the openAI technology GPT-3 which include:
- ability to create tailored learning experiences
- careful and purposeful integration
- academic misconduct and intellectual theft
This article is tailored more towards the language potential of AI in terms of generating written works, so I’m interested in learning more about implementation and how to re-imagine assignments.

Hi Annette!
ReplyDeleteI am totally new to the world of AI but the resources you collected has helped me gain a better understanding of the pros and cons when using it within education. I look forward to learning more about AI in your next post :) Thanks for sharing!
