What future teaching opportunities interest me that relate to digital technologies… a big question. I have always been interested in technology and integrating it into my teaching practice – even completing the Integrating Technology into the Digital Age Diploma Program at SFU! Yes, I’m doing another diploma program (I even have my Masters). I need a badge that says life-long learner! I completed the diploma program while I was a TTOC and inquired into using an app to monitor the noise level in classrooms, creating relationships with students, and creating a TTOC-focused personal learning network via Twitter.
I started brainstorming potential opportunities for this course. I even googled “teaching in the future”. As I went through the ideas I generated, I began to think what I could do in my current teaching position of Grade 7 teacher that would be the most impactful. As a teacher in an International Baccalaureate school, we have a large focus on inquiry-based teaching and agency. I have taught a lot about digital literacy and I think I’m still a little scarred from creating a PLN on Twitter (I used the metaphor of Jurassic Park in my presentation – good in theory, not in practice… at least for me). That leaves me with SLLC’s, coding, makerspaces, video creation and publishing, and artificial intelligence. As I want to make this inquiry the most impactful, I narrowed my choice down to artificial intelligence (AI).

It feels like artificial intelligence came like a hurricane roaring through a city. One day it felt like it was non-existent, and the next day everyone was creating art using specific key words and getting ChatGPT to write their essays for them. I want to inquire into the following:
- What is Artificial Intelligence?
- practical uses of AI for teachers and students, including written and visual mediums
- implications of AI, such as for assessment and plagiarism
- limitations of AI
- copyright issues
This new tool looks like it is around to stay so I think it is important to better understand it and adapt our teaching and learning toward it. I think it will create more authentic learning experiences where we might leave some of the more traditional assessment methods behind for some higher-order critical and creative thinking practices.
I will conduct this inquiry within my Grade 7 classroom as this age group lends itself well to this area. Students are aware of AI and even last year, some students used AI for creative and informational writing. An important document to refer to will be our school’s academic integrity policy. It currently does not have any details about the use of AI and a quick google search shows that SD44 does not have any current documents about the use of AI in schools. In addition, I will refer to British Columbia's Grade 7 curriculum, specifically for Language Arts and potentially for Science and Social Studies as well as our school’s Approaches to Learning skills (that align with BC Core Competencies). Technological resources that will be required are laptops to explore ChatGPT and other AI technologies. More information and research will be found on blogs and academic databases.
